The most visited Museum in Italy
1.700.000 visitors for year
2.200 works on show
Uffizi Gallery Florence is one of the most famous and oldest museums in the whole word: its name originally means "offices"·.
In fact Medici family, at the end of 16th century, incharged Giorgio Vasari to build a strategical place adjiacent to their Palazzo Vecchio and extended until Arno river with the idea of hosting offices and bureaucratic meetings.
Over the years, further parts of the palace evolved into a display place for many of the paintings and sculpture collected by the Medici family or commissioned by them.
Vasari could hardly have imagined that inside his building he designed for other purposes, almost all the major painters whose biographies he had written in one of the most interesting documents on the history of art, Lives, would have been on show.
Vasari Corridor links Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti: 1 km long, it was used by Medici family to safety move between their residence and the goverment place. Nowadays the Vasari Corridor hosts a selection of 17th and 18th century paintings, including a unique self-portrait collection of painters and offers an amazing panoramic view over Florence.
The heritage in the Uffizi Gallery cannot be compared to any other world collection and is probably the only one to have just masterpieces of exceptional value: the incredible collection starts from the 13th century with Cimabue, and includes works by Tuscan Macchiaioli or foreigners artists as Delacroix, Rubens, Rembrandt, Goya.
The peculiarity is Uffizi hosts the most incredible Florentine and Italian Renaissance selection: just to name some works of art, Uffizi Gallery hosts 27 Botticelli paitings, including The Birth of Venus and the Primavera, the Doni Tondo by Michelangelo, the Annunciation by Leonardo Da Vinci.
Art lovers normally go there many times. The point is everybody loves art when in Florence!
