Amsterdam had been a famous and powerful city of maritime trade for many centuries. In the second half of the 20th century, it was considered the gay capital of Europe due to the city's liberal atmosphere, which was far ahead of most other European cities and countries, and due to the beauty of the city. There are several gay areas in Amsterdam, none are really far from each other: Reguliersdwarsstraat, the area around the Amstelstreet and also Warmoesstraatwith, with its famed gay leather, cruise bars and fetish shops.
