Occasionally Florence might not have such an easy time maintaining its place in Italy next to beyond famous and beloved cities like Rome and Venice. But you shouldn’t be fooled by this, because Florence has so much to offer! Especially in April there are some really great events in town you shouldn’t miss out on.
Scoppio del Carro: This is described as the ABSOLUTE MUST to witness when spending time in Florence in April. The Scoppio del Carro (Explosion of the Cart) is a lovely tradition Florentines celebrate during Easter. On Easter Sunday, in 2014 it’s April 20th, an antique cart packed with pyrotechnics and fireworks makes its way through the city to explode in one beautiful spectacular on the famous Piazza del Duoma. On its route the cart is escorted by 150 soldiers, musicians dressed up in amazing costumes and a lot of spectators to make the traditional march one of the greatest parades of Florence. In addition, a team of majestic white oxen decorated with spring flowers accompany the “carro” to make its appearance even more impressive. To note down: April 20th, start: 9.30 am at Via il Prato, arriving: 10.30 am at Piazza del Duomo.
ART: With the ART Florence hosts one of the most important art and crafts fairs of Europe. Since the quiet early year of 1931 people from all over the world travel to Italy to show their talents at the Mostra dell’Artigianato aka ART in Florence. In 2014 from April 24th to May 1st people can admire all kind of art and crafts such as hand-made clothing, jewelry, sculptures, wood, paintings, carving and many more. This annual trade show is truly one great experience and real must-go for art lovers of all kind. The fair takes place at Fortezza da Basso at opens its doors daily from 10.00 am to 11.00 pm. Our tip: go on a work day because tickets are cheaper and the fair is less crowded than during the weekend.
Notte Bianca: Fort the fourth time already the Notte Bianca takes place in Florence. The White Night happens to be on April 30th and will again spice up the whole city. What basically happens during a Notte Bianca? Florence does just not sleep! Museums and shops stay open, streets and squares are filled with music, markets, food carts, there are DJ’s playing outdoor, different performances to enjoy and cultural happenings to attend to. And generally everything is free! So you see, that it is one great night to join in. Whoever wants to extend his or her party into the late hours of night is welcome to do so since bars and clubs are usually very well populated. Sounds fun, right?
Spring Plant and Flower Show: There is just nothing that says “spring” so loudly than flowers do. So, what a perfect coincidence that Florence provides the ideal spring celebration in April. From April 25th to May 1st (daily from 9.00 am to 7.00 pm) people can enjoy the pleasure of a wide range of flowers and plants being shown at the annual Spring Plant and Flower Show. On the programm are indoor and outdoor plants which can be expected to present their whole beauty since botanically that exhibition takes place at the perfect time of the year. Having started as a rather small event, the flower show has extended to a well known happening attracting a large amount of visitors. Since it takes place in the amazing Giardino dell’Orticoltura even the surrounding will be extraordinary.
