Why it is worth to visit this small British territory at to the Spanish coast
Gibraltar is a small British overseas territory with an amazing diversity of nature at the Spanish coast with bilingual citizens.
It has an area of 6.8 km² and is next to the border of Andalusia, Spain and at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea.
The symbol of the territory is the Rock of Gibraltar and the area is home to 30,000 Gibraltarians and other nationalities. The citizens are very proud to be British and are bilingual in English and Spanish.
Gibraltar is a unique place for the curious traveler. Take time to explore the caves and tunnels especially those not meant for tourists!
The inside of the rock is an absolute labyrinth with secret internal roads and tunnels four times longer than those on the surface. This is one of various attractions you can find in this little paradise:
This is the place where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic and from where you can see the coast of Africa.
Since 2013 it is complete renewed and you can travel along the coast and enjoy the view in lovely cafes.
This is an amazing walk with incredible views and wildlife which takes about 2 hours. It starts at the Jew's Gate bird observatory and ends at the east side of the top of the rock. If you are not suffering from vertigo you should really go for it and take a picnic with you. Still we do not recommend to do this walk with small kids.
There are a mixture of stone steps, gravel tracks and wooden terraces. Proper walking shoes would make sense but are not necessary.
And do not forget to take water with you.
Great Siege Tunnel
This tunnel which acted in the Second World War as a defense system allows you to get into the past and the history.
The tunnel is not very long so you have enough time to read all the informative panels which are displayed everywhere.
The information radio is available in 6 languages and gives you more information about this topic. At the same time you will have an amazing view from there of Gibraltar including the airport.
The Rock and the Barbary Macaques monkeys
From the Rock you will have a large view of the harbor, the city and the airport. You should go up until the fortress and take some pictures with the famous Barbary Macaques monkeys. But be careful: to give food is illegal and be careful with your sunglasses, sometimes they are taking them.
