September is a great month to come and visit Barcelona. As well as having Catalunyas National day of celebration there are plenty more festivals and events to make your stay fantastic!
Diada Nacional de Catalunya
Event date: Friday 11th September 2015
Event location: Various locations in Barcelona and Catalunya
La Diada is Catalunyas National Day. In Catalunya “Onze de setembre” is celebrated as the National Day and a public holiday both in Barcelona and Catalonia region of Spain. It is similar to the American 4th July. The celebrations are nearly 150 years old and sometimes referred to just as the “Diada” and there are street parties and music all day throughout the city. There is strong support among part of the Catalan population for full independence from Spain and there are many nationalist organisations that organise events.
As well as a celebration the Diada is a commemoration of the siege and final fall of Barcelona in 1714.
Ofrena floral al Monument de Rafael Casanova
One of the main traditions on the Diada is a ceremony at 09:00 where people go and watch the current and former presidents of Spain laying wreaths to commemorate the city and the lives lost. This takes place at the Rafael Casanova monument which is at the junction of streets Carrer d'Alí Bei / Ronda de Sant Pere. There is also a wreath laying ceremony at the tomb of Rafael Casanova in the church "Iglesia de Sant Baldiri de Sant Boi" in the town of Sant Boi de Llobregat near Barcelona. If you are interested in history or simply would like to experience a bit of Catalan culture then go and take a look!

La Mercè Festival Barcelona 2015 .
Merce festival is Barcelona's biggest festival of the year. During the week long festival (with the main day being 24th September), close to two million people will attend cultural and artistic presentations held throughout the city. The most traditional activities of the Mercè Festival are based in the popular culture of Catalonia. Especially noteworthy are the street parades, originating from the spectacular processions which took place centuries ago for the celebration of Corpus Christi. Each day of the festival is celebrated with its own parade filled with mythical characters and traditional drumming.
There are about 600 events spread throughout the plazas, streets, museums, and parks. All entertainment is free. Barcelona's metro trains run all night during the Merce festival. The festival includes concerts, fireruns, fireworks, human towers and much more.
