In August, the 1st to 15th, Madrid reconnects with its most traditional roots by celebration of the Fiestas de San Cayetano, San Lorenzo and La Paloma. Today they are some of the most on-the-rise Madrid holidays with more neighborhood participation, which makes the holidays more heartfelt and helps neighbors developa strong bond with eachother. These festivals are held at the District Center of Madrid, particularly in the area of La Latina and district of Lavapiés in the first half of August with endless activities and events: music is the centerpiece of festivals, dancing with an orchestra, mobile discos, spectacular magic shows, theater and operetta, sports events, costume contests, exhibitions of shawls, pasodobles competitions, free lemonade, and many more activities can be enjoyed on the street.
The kick-off takes place on Saturday July 30th at 9:30pm in the Plaza Mayor with the proclaimation. From that moment the celebrations begins across three different areas that honor each of their respective saints. The events in honor of San Cayetano, which are centered in the square Cascorro last until August 7. A day later San Lorenzo takes over, taking their actions around the corner to Argumosa street during second week of August until the 10th. Finally, from August 11 it is the Virgin de la Paloma's turn, which will keep the excitement going on in the streets until August 15. La Virgin de la Paloma has such widespread devotion, she is the real patron of the people of Madrid, in contrast to the official patron of Madrid, the Virgin de la Almudena.
The concerts are always one of the main demands of the holidays. Among the activities will be performances by: Aline Frazao, Sheila Blanco, Distryto 13, the show castizo of Emy and Company, the Corleone family, the legendary Burning, Pitingo, Nolasco, Taxi, El Lunático and Mala Rodríguez.
The saints, who these festivals are named after, are honored every one their day. On August 7, San Cayetano Church celebrates a mass and a procession. Here the faithful try to steal a carnation off the float to "get bread and work the rest of the year." San Lorenzo's mass is held on August 10, which is his big day of festivities. On August 15, the Virgin de la Paloma receives a wreath at the entrance of her church, mass is celebrated in her honor.
