In April the streets of Madrid will be full of Easter celebrations.
Easter
The Holy Week, “Semana Santa” in Spanish, is celebrated from 9th to 17th of April.
Traditions
Spain is a Catholic country, so many of the Easter traditions are somehow religious. Most important tradition of the Easter period are the religious processions, which can be seen on the streets almost every day. Also churches and basilicas offer religious music concerts and masses.
If you would like to hear sacred music, you can go to churches Basilica of Nuestra Señora de Atocha, the Parish Church of Santa Cruz, and to the Pontifical Basilica of San Miguel. These three churches will be hosting a serie of 11 concerts during the Easter Week.
On Plaza Mayor you can see a Tamborrada Maña on Easter Sunday 16th of April. It will set up a route in which religious guilds accompanied with drums will be performing the commemoration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ three days after his death.
Processions
The three most important processions are taking place on Palm Sunday 9th April and on Wednesday 12th April.
The first two processions are celebrated on Palm Sunday. First one is called “Nuestro Padre Jesús del Amor”, and it starts from Catedral de La Almudena at 4:30 pm. The second is “Cristo de la Fe y el Perdón”, and it starts from the Pontifical Basilica of San Miguel at 7 pm.
The third procession is taking place on Holy Wednesday 12th of April. It starts from Parroquía del Carmen at 8:15 pm in the evening.

Gastronomy
During the Easter Week in Madrid you can taste typical and traditional dishes. One of the essential dishes is torrija, which is a sweet one kind of donut. It is made of bread soaked in milk with cinnamon, and then fried and rolled in sugar.
Soldaditos de Pavia is another typical dish during the Easter period. It is fried and crispy pieces of cod. Another popular dish is “Madrid style chickpea stew”, served with spinach, potatoes, hard-boiled egg and cod croquettes.
Football
April in Madrid is a perfect time for visiting for a fan of football. Both teams, Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid, are having several games in the Champions League and in the Spanish La Liga.
The teams are playing against each others in a La Liga match on Saturday 8th of April on Santiago Bernabéu stadium. You can buy tickets for the game from here.
Real Madrid
Football team Real Madrid is playing five games on their home stadium Santiago Bernabéu. The most important is the Champions League match against FC Bayern München on Tuesday 18th April. You can buy tickets to the game from here.

Atlético de Madrid
In April team Atlético de Madrid is playing four matches on their home stadium Estadio Vicente Calderón. One of the games is a Champions League match against Leicester City FC on Wednesday 12th April. You can buy tickets for the match here.

Cirque Le Roux – The Elephant in the Room
From 19th to 23rd of April you can enjoy French theatre in Teatro Circo Price in Madrid. Cirque Le Roux is a young French theatre company, and they’re coming to Madrid with a show called “The Elephant in the Room”. The performance is built up on four strong characters, which combines circus, film noir and theatre. The story of The Elephant in the Room begins in the autumn of 1937, and becomes a romantic mystery.
The theatre performance is suitable for audience older than 14 years and from here you can buy tickets.
