November in Amsterdam – the city won’t sleep this month

In November, Amsterdam will hardly sleep. There is so much going on in the city that it will be hard to sleep for you either. You are looking for some active days in a city? IDFA – International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam
This festival, taking place from 19th to 30th November, brings great films, devoted fans and talented film-makers together. All films tell a story about life: funny and moving, or shocking and sad. The films are screened in English or with English subtitles.

KLIK! Amsterdam Animation Festival
There will be a massive selection of top-quality animated films from 4th to 9th November in Amsterdam. As animation has become an integral part of cinema, it is getting more and more interesting for the film industry and for all of us. There will be competitions, shows, exhibitions, workshops and even more.

Storytelling Festival
The 7th edition of the Storytelling Festival is coming to Amsterdam from 1st to 9th November. Dutch and international storytellers are goint to tell tall tales, old legends, beautiful stories and touching recitals. Besides entertainment, the aim of this festival is to find the best storyteller and to increase awareness of the art. Don't miss this great event!

Het Hoofdgerecht
Food festival in the Dutch Capital: From 28th to 30th November the festival is held at the monumental market hall in the Food center of Amsterdam. Attend the event and enjoy food of a large variety of food trucks as well as fun-fair attractions and DJs.

Museum Night
Every year on the first Saturday in November, over 50 museums open their doors from 19.00 to 02.00 for visitors. There are special events as workshops, concerts, special tours, and performances as well as tasty food and drinks. With the ticket for only 18.50 Euro, you have free entrance to all participating museums as well as free transportation on special trams and boats and a discount on the entrance to one of the afterparties.

pAn -  Amsterdam's biggest antique market
It takes place in the city from 23rd to 30th November at the RAI congress and exhibition center. Over 120 antique dealers present their goods at this market for one week. Even if you don't intend to buy anything, this event might be great and interesting for you!

Besides, there are two very interesting cultural events coming to Amsterdam next month.

Olympic Stadium, Amsterdam

At first, the comedian Eddie Griffin, star of the sitcom Malcom&Eddie, is coming to the city. He performs his show on Thursday, 20th November, in the Melkweg's Rabozaal. Secondly, a theatrical production of Anne Frank's life will be performed until 31 January at the Theater Amsterdam. The play focuses on the two years spent by Anne and her family in the secret annex.

You are keen in some sport events? Have a look at the following two events that couldn't be more different than they acctually are.

On Sunday, 9th November, the Phanos athletics association organises this running event. There are four different competitions. Have a look at the details:
1km – children and parents-run
5km – run
10km – first wave
10km – second wave

Spanish Riding School of Vienna
On 29th and 30th November, the triple Olympic gold winner Anky van Gruvsen will gallop on her Lipizzaner horses into the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam. In her show she presents centuries-old riding styles from Spain ect. There are tickets from 39 to 79 Euro. Don't miss watching this gorgeous animals!

Last but not least, there are some musical events waiting for you. Even in this sector, you find everything the heart desires: musicals and concerts of any kind of music as rock, pop and classic.

October in Amsterdam – events for the whole family

It is October, and you want to go on holiday with the whole family? Amsterdam is the right choice for you. There are several events in the city for children and their parents.

Cinekid (for children)

This year, the annual film, television and new-media festival for children is hold from 11th to 18th October. Every year, more than 50,000 national and international children in the Netherlands attend this festival. There are not only films, documentaries, shorts, cartoons, television productions as well as cross-media productions but also some interactive installations and workshops.

 

For young adults

Amsterdam Dance Event (15th-19th Oct.): The world's biggest club festival and Europe's leading electronic music conference is coming to Amsterdam again.

Fiesta Cubana (3rd Oct., from 10pm): Every first Friday of the month, there is the popular Cuban style salsa night. This time DJ Arno is hosting at Badcuyp Amsterdam (5 Euro entry).

PINT (24th-26th Oct.): The Dutch beer festival, where you can try out some of the 50 types of bok beer is coming in October to Amsterdam.

40th anniversary of Bimhuis: This year, it's the 40th birthday of the Bimhuis in Amsterdam. The celebration starts with a kick-off weekend (1st to 5th Oct.). There will be a large number of concerts and other events.

March in Amsterdam

Cirque du Soleil Kooza: The famous Cirque du Soleil Kooza will be in Amsterdam from the 13th of March until the 27th of April. Kooza tells the story of The Innocent, a melancholy loner who is looking for his place in the world. Doing so, he meets a lot of different characters, such as the King, the Trickster, the Obnoxious Tourist with his bad dog and the Pickpocket.

Between strength and fragility, laughter and smiles, turmoil and harmony, KOOZA explores themes of fear, identity, recognition and power. The show is set in an electrifying and exotic visual world full of surprises, thrills, chills, audacity and total involvement.” The Cirque du Soleil Kooza unites acrobatic performance and the art of clowning and thus is a spectacle you definitely need to see when you are in Amsterdam. Beyoncé: This month, a very special event will be taking place in Amsterdam – Beyoncé will give a concert at Ziggo Dome. Beyoncé Knowles became famous in 1997 as the lead singer of Destiny’s Child.  In 2003, she started her career as solo artist with her debut album Dangerously in Love. Today, she is one of the most famous singers in the world.

Keukenhof: Keukenhof in the Netherlands is the biggest flower garden in the world. Each year, it reopens with a new topic; this year’s topic will be “Holland”. If you are thinking about Holland, do you mostly think about tulips? Then you are right! At this year’s Keukenhof, more than 7 million tulips, daffodils and hyacinths will fill over 32 hectares with color and fragrance – a wonderful event.

Flower and plant shows are taking place in the pavilions as well as different events can be seen every weekend, old and young will be entertained. Furthermore, seven different gardens are meant to inspire, showing different works of art. Bike tours and boat trips can be made to discover all the colorful fields of flowers by surrounding the park – Keukenhof has a lot to offer. It opens on the 20th of March and can be visited until the 18th of May during two months. The entrance costs 7,50€ for children, adults have to pay 15€. Find more information on keukenhof.nl.

Chocoa Festival: The Chocoa Festival in Amsterdam is taking place on the 29th and 30th of March in the National Maritime Museum, both days from 10am until 5pm. It is the perfect event for chocolate lovers who want to know more about chocolate: what is the origin, where does chocolate come from? How is it being produced? And how can the taste be varied? All this can be found out at this festival which is an important event in Amsterdam, happening every year. Moreover, visitors can participate in workshops and talk to the chocolate makers in order to hear their stories. It is a nice event for families with children, they will definitely enjoy it. Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition: Who doesn’t know the story of the incredible, unsinkable luxury liner Titanic? Probably everyone has heard of it. What once started out as a fairytale, ended up in the most dramatic shipwreck in history. Until the 11th of May, Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition can be visited in the Amsterdam EXPO, taking you back into the times of the largest liner in the world. Life on board can be looked at and all the information about the night the Titanic sank within only three hours can be gotten. A very interesting and stirring exhibition, telling the story of one of the greatest disasters of all times. The photo below is one of the last ones that has ever been taken of the Titanic.

February in Amsterdam

You will spend some days in Amsterdam this February and are wondering, what you can do in this city? We will give you some tips and reveal the best places to go to you.

De Coolste Baan van Nederland:  De coolste Baan van Nederland, translated: “the coolest rink in the Netherlands”, is an ice skating rink in the Olympic stadium in Amsterdam. It will open on the first of February and remain so during one month until the second of March.

In the rink, up to 350 people can ice-skate and enjoy a nice day in the Olympic stadium. Each day, the Stadium offers a special program. On Tuesdays, for example, Amsterdam music is being played and appetizer, beer and bread can be bought.  Each Thursday, a DJ puts on good music and a beautiful lightshow. You can find the full program online. The ice rink in the Olympic stadium is perfect to spend a day full of fun and joy in Amsterdam. 

Valentine’s Day: Valentine’s Day is coming soon and there are many things to do in Amsterdam. If you want to have a romantic, nice day with your beloved, go on the love boat trip. The love boat cruises the canals in Amsterdam and the trip can be done during the day or at night. It is probably one of the best ways to discover the city; this is why the boats are considered as one of the favorite touristic attractions in Amsterdam.

James Arthur on concert: James Arthur is a singer and musician who became known because he won the British casting show The X Factor in 2012. His debut single “Impossible” has been released after the final of the show and became the number one on the UK Single Charts, having been sold 2.5 million times all over the world.

This year, he is touring through Europe and will be in Amsterdam on the 24th of February. Tickets cost 39€ and can be bought here.

Rembrandt – Auerbach: Raw Truth: Since December 2013, an exhibition of Auerbach’s paintings can be visited in the Rijksmuseum. The exhibition will be open until the 16th of March and is a wonderful way to spend your time in Amsterdam. Frank Auerbach was born in 1931 in Berlin. In 1939, his parents sent him to Britain where he lived in London from 1947 on. Today, he is considered as one of the most important British painters since the Second World War. At the beginning of the 1960s, he became inspired by Rembrandt who used to paint the raw truth, so he started to do the same thing. The picture below shows his painting “Primrose Hill Summer Sunshine” which originated in 1964.

Chinese New Year in Amsterdam

The Chinese New Year - also known as the Lunar New Year – is the most important day in the Chinese calendar. In order to celebrate this day, huge festivities are taking place, which are meant to lead into the New Year. For this event, cities become decorated with red balloons, garlands and blow-outs. In the evening, the whole family gets together and has a feast with fish and chicken. Moreover, children receive gifts from their relatives. At midnight, a firework starts and lasts until the early morning.

As a lot of Chinese people are living in the Netherlands, these festivities are also being held in Amsterdam. In the photo below, you can see how these festivities look like.

Chinese New Year

This year, the Chinese New Year is on the 31st of January. And if you are going to Amsterdam these days anyways, you should definitely visit the historic Nieuwmarkt/Zeedijk neighbourhood in Amsterdam where you will be amazed by the Chinese way of celebrating New Year's Eve.
