Festa della Sensa: This feast is a lovely tradition accompanying the city for ages. The Festa della Sensa is one of Venice’s most famous and important festivities and attracts thousands of visitors each year. Taking place 40 days after Easter, in 2014 “Ascension Day” is hold on the last weekend of May – May 31st and June 1st. Festa della Sensa commemorates not just one but two important happenings in the city’s history: first the rescue of the denizens of Dalmatia imperiled by the Slavs by Doge Pietro II Orseolo in 1000, second people honor the Treaty of Venice in 1117 bringing peace to the city. Taking this day as proper occasion inhabitants do also remember Venice's marriage to the Sea and its strong bonding with ocean on this special date. Today the Festa della Sensa is celebrated with a big water parade to reenact the marriage ceremony by throwing a ring into the open water. One packed day of Venice’s background that shouldn’t be missed.
Festa della Sparesca: This festivity takes place on May 1st when the city and the world also celebrates the international Labor Day. “Primo Maggio” does not just mark the achievements of the working population but has also been taken as a great opportunity for celebrating the new asparagus harvest with a gondolier regatta – what could be more fitting for the city famous for its gondolas? The event takes place at Cavillino’s lagoon, a coastal area being situated a bit outside Venice but quick and easy to reach from the city centre. Expect some great traditional and maritime themed outfits worn by competitive participants paddling as fast as they can to gain victory. Take your camera with you and enjoy it.
Opera Gala: After a great load of tradition and festivities, finally here comes something different to mark in you schedule. Cultural interested people and especially friends of classical music will have their light joy on this one. On five dates in May visitors can enjoy the “Opera Gala” being hosted at the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista. Put out your fanciest evening wardrobe, lean back, relax and enjoy the most famous opera arias from artists such as Mozart, Puccini and Co. performed by baritone, soprano, tenor, string quartet and piano.
