El Prado was designed by Juan Villanueva in 1785. It originally housed the Natural History Cabinet, but the purpose and name changed over the years to the National Museum of Paintings and Sculptures.

In 1819, the Royal Museum opened to the public the very first time. The collection started out with "only" 1,510 pieces, some from the royal collection.
Nowadays, the National Museum comprises of 8,600 paintings and more than 700 sculptures.

The museum has been described as the museum of artists, not paintings. Instead of focusing on singular paintings, collectors assemble the archive with their favourite artists. It is known for its extensive collection of Bosch, Titian, El Greco, Rubens, Velázquez and Goya.
El Prado is definitely a must visit, when you are in Madrid. Best is to plan a whole day for the visit, since one can get lost amongst those more than 9,000 art works
Free admissions are from Monday to Saturday between 6pm and 8pm, on Sundays and Holidays from 5pm to 7pm.
