Barcelona’s district: Vila Olímpica

Vila Olimpica

Sharing the border with the Mediterranean sea, La Vila Olímpic neighborhood offers various sports activities, famous for the best nightclubs in Barcelona and the tallest buildings in the city.

History

La Vila Olímpica is a new neighborhood in Barcelona as it is constructed and formed during the late 1980s and early of the 1990s for the Summer Olympic Game 1992 in order to accommodate about 15,000 participated athletes. Formerly, it was an industrial area of Barcelona. The regeneration of neighborhoods was assigned to the most prestigious architectures at that time, such as Josep Martorell, Oriol Bohigas, David Mackay and Albert Puigdomènech.

One of the most remarkable landmarks of the neighborhood is a 52-meter long golden fish sculpture, which is covered with gilded stainless steel strips by a Canadian architect Frank Gehry. Interestingly, the intertwining glide stainless steel of the giant fish shines under the Mediterranean sun and changes the colors during the day, depending on the sun angle.
