Boqueria dates back to 1217, when small tables were put next to the city's gates, selling meats. Over the years, it developed to a real market, moved to the monastery of Sant Josep, after the take down of the city wall. After the monastery was destroyed, a square similar to Plaza Real was built. In 1840, the construction of the iron hall finally started.
Nowadays, La Boqueria fits over 2000 different stands, selling all kinds of food, from garden fruits and vegetables to fresh seafood, meats, dairy, spices, and flowers. Besides the wide array of fresh ingredients, visitors can sample one of the best tapas bars in Barcelona.
